Your Power, Your Choice: Community Choice Aggregation Explained

What Is Community Choice Aggregation?

Community Choice Aggregation is a simple concept with a powerful impact. Instead of having your utility set the price for electricity supply, the City of Columbus purchases electricity on behalf of residents and small businesses, using the community’s collective buying power to negotiate competitive rates.

Importantly, nothing changes about your electric service:

  • AEP Ohio still handles billing and delivery
  • No interruption of service
  • Opt in or out of the program anytime with no fees/penalties

CCA simply gives the community a stronger voice in how electricity is sourced and priced.

Why Columbus Voters Approved It

In 2020, Columbus voters overwhelmingly supported the creation of a clean energy aggregation program.

The goal was clear: provide access to 100% clean energy, use purchasing power to pursue competitive pricing, and support a more sustainable and locally driven energy future

Clean Energy Columbus shifts power back to the community, bringing greater transparency, competitive pricing, and access to clean energy. Columbus voted for that, and since June 2021, the program has been delivering on it.

A New Rate for Year Six

Clean Energy Columbus has locked in a new fixed rate of $0.1001/kWh for the sixth year of the program, effective June 1, 2026 through May 31, 2027. This rate is fixed for the full 12 months, so residents can lock in price stability while continuing to receive 100% clean energy through the program. Participation is also completely flexible. You can opt in or out at any time with no penalties or fees.

As always, our goal is to ensure Columbus residents receive the most competitive and stable rate possible, and that commitment doesn’t change.

More Than Savings — Community Benefits

Clean Energy Columbus was built to return value to the community it serves. Beyond the over $84 million in total savings delivered to residents since launch, the program has reinvested in Columbus neighborhoods through clean energy workforce training, local solar co-ops, energy efficiency programs, and partnerships with organizations like YouthBuild and IMPACT Community Action. When you participate, your energy use is connected to something bigger.

By participating, you’re not just choosing your electricity supplier—you’re helping Columbus continue its transition to a cleaner energy future.
