Energizing Columbus Together: Understanding Community Choice Aggregation and Its Benefits

Clean Energy Columbus (CEC) is the City of Columbus’ Community Choice Aggregation Program. CEC is a community-wide program that provides residents with cleaner and more competitive energy options.

What is Community Choice Aggregation:

Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a model of energy purchasing that allows communities to have decision-making power when it comes to the energy they receive, like choosing cleaner or more sustainable energy sources and receiving competitive prices.

CCA programs combine the energy needs of residents and small business across municipalities, counties, and/or groups of local governments, using collective buying power to negotiate better terms for electricity supply.

Residents vote to establish CCA programs in their area, and the Clean Energy Columbus program was approved by voters on the ballot in November 2020.

How CCA Differs from Traditional Utility Service

With traditional utility service, the company controls both energy supply and pricing. CCA shifts that decision-making to the community, providing greater transparency, competitive pricing, and access to renewables without changing how your electricity is delivered.

How Clean Energy Columbus Helps You

CEC provides competitive, stable electricity rates and includes renewable energy as part of the supply, at no extra cost to participate. The program is voluntary, and residents can opt in or out at any time with no penalties. It’s a simple way to support sustainability while potentially lowering your energy costs.

Since its launch, CEC has helped residents save over $55 million and now serves more than 200,000 households across the City.

More Than Just Energy

Clean Energy Columbus is also investing in the City. Recent community efforts include a career fair and a fire hydrant-building contest at Eastland Fairfield Career and Technical Schools. Additionally, there was a hands-on tools demonstration and learning event in partnership with YouthBuild and the Columbus Water and Power Electrical Maintenance Department. These initiatives help educate and inspire the next generation of energy workers while strengthening community ties.

CEC is about more than saving money; it’s about building a cleaner, more connected future for all Columbus residents.
